If you are the parent of a newborn, one area to place toys is above the crib. Those that make sounds can truly captivate any newborn, where they will enjoy the sounds and sight of a colorful animal or an enchanting mobile. This also ensures that the baby is kept safe, as they cannot reach the toys that dangle above them, yet are completely entertained.

You can also look for handheld toys that your newborn will enjoy. This can teach him or her to begin learning how to grasp objects. Soft toys with interesting textures, or even a teether, can fit into this category. Contrasting colors are wonderful as well; in time, your child will graduate from these to doll clothes with a lot of color!

There are plenty of other toys that are great for newborns. Unbreakable mirrors, music boxes, soft books, rattles, and other toys can be purchased for your child. All of these toys enforce the development of your baby’s senses, and should captivate him or her at this age. However, make sure to take preventive measures and only get toys that are made for babies and do not have choking hazards or any other type of danger.

Take some time to look at toys to complete your newborn’s collection. Perhaps you will begin to see which toys he or she likes the best. As your baby gets older, you can introduce him or her to toys that will continue to develop their senses and other areas of overall development.

Getting Your Kids to Eat Less Fast Food

One of the most difficult tasks in parenting is getting kids to eat healthier. Regardless of the rigors of your family lifestyle, eating fast food should be an occasional practice instead of a regular one. Eating fast food often becomes part of our diet as a small child. Parents reward children who have a successful doctors visit with a happy meal. Fast food restaurants are also a habitual stop coming to and from sports games and practices. Here are a few ways to limit fast food dining experiences in favor of some home cooking.

1.) Stop using food as a reward- When fast food is used as a reward, it gives children the impression that when you accomplish something difficult, you deserve to get some fast food. In effect, you are saying it’s okay to over-consume calories and eat high fat food as long as you deserve it. Instead, find a reward system that is appealing outside of high fat food.

2.) Reduce portion sizes- The stomach is amazingly adept at getting by with less food than most people think. From a young age, many of us are taught to eat until we are full. Not only is this unnecessary, but also potentially harmful to our bodies. Instead, serve your kids food more often but in smaller portions.

3) Reduce distrations while eating- Do you allow your son to watch TV while he eats? This tends to extend eating until programs are finished meaning more consumed calories.

Creating a Birth Plan

Even though women have approximately nine months to plan for the big day when they have their child, it can still be a chaotic situation. You need to figure out how you are getting to the hospital, who you need to call and what you need to bring. Luckily, soon-to-be parents are starting to create birthing day plans to guide them in what to do, who to call and what to bring.

If you nearing those final months of pregnancy and are thinking of creating a birthing day plan, here are some items you should consider planning.

What to Bring

You should create a list of items that you want to bring to the hospital on the day you give birth. This list can include cameras, toys, or even changes of clothing for you. Some soon-to-be-parents go as far as to create a suitcase packed with cameras, toys for the child and LRG clothing so everything is packed and ready to go on that special day.

Who to Call

There are certain people you want to notify when that special day comes. Create a list of all the people you plan on calling and notifying so no one gets overlooked. Some people might create a calling list so the soon-to-be-parents aren’t forced to spend all day on the phone notifying people.

How to Get There

To prevent you from stressing out once you go into labor, create a plan on how to get you to the hospital. This plan includes what car you will take, what route you will go and where you will go once you are at the hospital.

You’re Going to College! How Will You Pay For It?

It’s sobering to think of education finance once you’ve decided to pursue secondary education. Indeed, a good private college can cost in upwards of $30,000 a year. Even state run schools will cost you multiple thousands of dollars. In a perfect world, students would all come from rich families waiting to pick up the tab on their education. In reality, everyone must find a way to pay for college and other secondary schools.

In order to get your school paid for entirely, you will need to achieve the grades to warrant an educational scholarship. In addition, the athletic ability to qualify for a sports scholarship could be a free way through a university door. These scholarships apply only to Division One schools and to only a small percentage of the student pool. The rest of the population has to find a way to pay for college. With a little diligence, you can apply for grant money, which will be tuition that you do not need to reimburse.

Stafford loans are the most often used means of education finance. Services like payday loans can be used to cover the cost of textbooks if these loans don’t cover all your costs. Stafford loans must be applied for and the amounts are often contingent on parental income. These are loans, which will need to be repaid starting six months after you graduate.

Paying for college isn’t easy, but the expectation is that you will get a career allowing you to repay the loans. It’s wise to look down the road at what your career will generate as an income and compare that to education costs.

Ways to Avoid Sickness While Traveling

Motion sickness is caused by signals between the ears, the eyes, and the body itself becoming misinterpreted by the brain. In other words, if you are in a situation where the body is not moving but something else is (such as a car or ship), and you are trying to read or make any other movements, the brain may incorrectly perceive that your body is moving when it isn’t. This can cause the nausea, dizziness, and vomiting that is often associated with this illness.

Children often suffer from motion sickness, and for some this may continue into adulthood. The symptoms can range from a slight “queasy” feeling to full-blown nausea, sometimes accompanied by vomiting. In addition, the sufferer can feel dizzy or even experience headaches.

This can be diminished by the use of several methods. These include sitting in the middle row of car seats (if there is a middle row) rather than the rear (this can work for children as well as adults), or sitting in the front. If no middle row is present, and the sufferer is a child, the middle of the back seat may be the best place. On planes, as far away from the lavatory as possible, and as close to the middle as possible is the best place for motion sickness sufferers, while the inner decks of a ship or the middle seat of a pleasure boat are the best places.

Motion sickness can be treated by using over-the-counter drugs such as Dramamine. You can get this medication in pill or patch form. Sipping Ginger ale, and avoiding heavy, greasy foods can also help. However, your stomach should not be empty, as an empty stomach has been known to trigger nausea. There are also wristbands or bracelets that apply pressure to one area of the wrist where it is said that pressing will alleviate symptoms of this illness. Those wishing to avoid medication may want to try this remedy.

Watching For Signs of Autism in Kids Under Two

One of the challenges of parenting is watching for signs of autism. By now we know that early intervention is the best way to reverse the sign of autism which could negatively effect your child’s life. Indeed, though they are more doctors looking for these signs as well, some doctor’s are still likely to think a male child is a late bloomer before opting for an autism diagnosis. Here are a few signs to watch out for to determine whether or not you should have your yound one screened for autism.

1.) A child who doesn’t respond to his name- If a child always seems to be in their own world and doesn’t respond to their name, the first thing you want to have checked is there hearing. If they can hear but just do not seem to hear when you’re trying to get their attention then it’s possible they have autism.

2.) Delays in speech- Autistic children are often significantly speech delayed. They have a harder time connecting some dots than other kids and speech is often an area of significant delay for these kids. Indeed, speech is most often a significant form of therapy at the early intervention stage of autism.

3.) Obsessive compulsive behavior- Autistic children will often exhibit OCD behaviors like lining up object or shapes in patterns that often would not occur to a child whose brain operates on a more customary plane.

It is important to take autism into your own hands as a parent. No one knows a child better than their parents an a parents intuition is often correct. If you feel your child exhibits one or more of these symptoms, feel free to discuss these issues with your primary care physician.

The Mental Health Benefits of Writing

Writing can be a very hard thing to do, but it can also be rewarding on many fronts. Some write for themselves, like in a diary or journal, and some write for others. Authors and journalists entertain and inform, and it’s quite possible to change the lives of many people through this wonderful medium. Being able to write is an incredibly versatile tool, and holds many benefits for your mental health.

It Alleviates Stress
There will be days where you just wish you could forget all your troubles and wish them away. Instead, write them down. Face them head on. Once you write them out, it’s possible you can see them for what they are. Then you can deal with them. It can relieve the pressures of everything that tries to bring you down. Just like weight lifters power through their frustrations, you can write away what’s got you down.

It’s a Tool to Unclog Your Mind
Imagine your mind as a tangled mess of rope. Your mind is blocked. Sit down and write without really thinking about it and hopefully by the end, that tangled mess will sort itself out.

It Improves Your Linguistic Skills
No matter what language you read or write, the act of writing will improve your ability to do so tenfold. If you can write well, it means that you understand the language, and you can work to improve this understanding. You may not notice it, but your vocabulary will rapidly expand.

It Improves Your Self-Esteem
Have you ever tried to write something, but lost interest or got writer’s block? That’s rather common, but those who push through and complete a piece get rewarded with the amazing feeling of accomplishment. Anybody can start a piece of writing, but not everybody can finish it. It feels good to know that. Writing is a sign of intelligence, artistry, and perseverance. Be proud of yourself and your talents.

Caring For Your Cast

When somebody suffers from a fracture in a bone, a doctor will put a cast around it to protect it. A cast is a hard casing that prevents the rattling and moving of the fractured bone so that it can heal properly. Casts are most commonly made of plaster, but can also be made out of fibreglass, and come in many different kinds. These usually stay on for an extended period of time, typically for more than three weeks. You will have to take special care in order to preserve the quality of the cast. Here are a few ways to do this.

- It’s unlikely that you will want to go without bathing for the entire healing process, but you can’t get your cast wet. If you have a cast on your arm, secure a plastic bag around it with elastics or string. Double-bag it if you feel you need the extra security. If you have a cast on your leg, do the same, but dangle your leg outside the tub.

- Your skin will get itchy from lack of sunlight and the dead skin cells building up. Try not to scratch, and don’t put anything sharp inside the cast. If you cut yourself, it won’t heal properly and could get infected.

- To decrease swelling of the injured limb, keep it elevated above your chest, if it’s the arm, if possible for at least two days.

- If the cast becomes loose or damaged, see a physician as soon as possible for a replacement.

- Don’t apply pressure to the cast, plaster or fibreglass, as it may break. This is especially important if the cast is on your leg. Talk to your doctor to see if you can get a cast-boot or crutches.

- After the cast is removed, and if it was over a joint, it’s going to be stiff. This will take time to loosen up.

- Rehabilitation may be required.

All About Staph Infections

Skin is an incredible organ. It can stretch and absorb water. It can change colour to protect itself, and if it’s damaged, it regenerates. It’s not impervious to infection or all types of damage. Staph Infection is a serious ailment of the skin, and is potentially fatal. It takes a lot for the skin to beat this nasty infection.

What is Staph Infection?

Staph Infection, or Staphylococcus, is bacteria that invades the skin and can lead to different diseases of varying severity. Some people get a mild infection that doesn’t require treatment, but it is potentially fatal. However, the bacteria themselves don’t cause the infection. If the skin has been damaged, like by acne, for example, the bacteria can overrun the body’s natural defences, causing infection and disease.

What are some of the symptoms of Staph Infection?

-Abscesses
-Boils
-Pustules
-Infected area can be inflamed and sore

It’s possible for Staph bacteria to enter the blood stream. This can cause a high fever, low blood pressure, or chills.

When one has acne that gets infected with Staph Infection, something similar to flesh eating disease can develop. The acne implodes and festers, and can begin to crust or turn into holes in the flesh varying from shallow to deep depths.

What are some treatment options for people with Staph Infection?

Staph Infection is communicable and can be transferred from person to person. Should the infected person have a moderate or severe case of this infection, immediate medical attention should be sought. Quarantine may be needed to avoid the spread of the infection or disease while antibiotics can be administered. Depending on the severity intravenous antibiotics may be needed. However, a sample of the bacteria will be taken to determine what antibiotics need to be used in order to kill the bacteria of that particular culture.

There is no vaccine to prevent Staph Infection. Seek medical attention at the sign of symptoms.

An Overview of Birth Control Methods

Modern technology has revolutionized the way humans live their lives, including intimate relations. Because of the invention of birth control, people can have these intimate relations without much worry of conception. With these methods of birth control, you can achieve control over your life and better prevent any unwanted pregnancies to occur.

Contraception for Males:

The Condom
This barrier device acts as a sheath for the penis. It prevents sperm from entering the vagina. There is a wide variety of condom types, and they’re relatively inexpensive. They are predominantly made of latex, but are also made of sheep skin or polyurethane, among other materials.

Vasectomy
This permanent method of birth control deals with the severing of the vas deferens tubes, the tubes that connect the testes to the urethra, and then sealing them with either stitches or cauterization.

The Male Pill
Yes, that’s right. Soon enough, it’s the male’s turn to have a go at ‘The Pill’. In a nutshell, this pill will suppress a man’s sperm count while maintaining levels of testosterone. It’s entirely reversible.

Contraception for Females:

The Female Condom
It’s essentially the same thing as the male condom, but in reverse. The female condom, made of polyurethane or synthetic nitrile, is a long sheath that is inserted into the vagina, stopping any sperm from actually having the chance to inseminate the egg.

Emergency Contraception
This form of contraception deals with the ingesting of a pill that prevents ovulation or fertilization. It’s better known as “The Morning after Pill”, and only works within a certain time-frame of sexual intercourse.

The Pill
This is seemingly the most popular form of birth control, ingested daily, that’s extremely effective. It contains hormones, typically estrogen and progesterone, that alter the functions of the uterus and ovaries to prevent pregnancy. If even one day is skipped, it’s not effective, and a back-up form of contraception must be used, like a male or female condom.
