Budget-Friendly Tips for Tasty Holiday Meals

The holidays are quickly approaching! If you are like most people, you’re probably anticipating fun, presents, and lots of food! With all the celebrations coming in the next few months, the budget can become extra tight. For many Americans, it’s important to watch where the money goes and always look for ways to save. However, you don’t have to skimp on your favorite holiday meals and treats. Take a look at some ideas for making your favorite recipes more budget-friendly.

Think Smaller Scale

If you love baked goods, you can still have all the delicious cakes and cookies you love to bake. You just need to think on a small scale. Instead of a three-layer cake that will cost more money in sugar and eggs, go with cupcakes. You get the same great taste of your favorite cake, only in smaller, less expensive portions. Search in your favorite recipe finder cupcake recipes to try something new.

Cook with What’s in Season

When it comes to fruits and vegetables, it’s also more cost-effective to cook with those that are in season. In the fall months, go with apples and peaches, which are abundant. Skip the strawberries and melons until later. For Christmas, delicious apple pies will make your house smell spectacular!

Plan Ahead

If you know that Thanksgiving is not complete without pumpkin pie, plan ahead. Search the coupon lists, grocery store sales, and deal finder websites a couple of months ahead of the holidays to find coupons for canned pumpkin pie. That way, when it comes to the week of Thanksgiving, you won’t be paying the highest price for the essential ingredient.

How will you cook your favorite dishes this holiday season?

Life Insurance for Future Parents

As a future parent, life insurance is important for yourself and your potential children. This insurance can pay for death expenses, provide inheritance for your heirs, and pay for other costs after you pass away. It helps take financial stress off your loved ones once you’re gone. You should consider life insurance before you have children, as your finances can get side tracked while paying for the cost of having a child. It is also crucial if you don’t want to pass on your debts to your children.

Why Have Life Insurance?

Life insurance is important to covering several expenses after you die, relieving your spouse or children of that responsibility. Life insurance is used in many of the following situations:

  • The cost of your funeral and burial. The average funeral costs well over $6,000, so having life insurance is a great idea in order to cover these costs.
  • Unpaid bills, such as medical bills.
  • Charitable causes. Many people have life insurance to gain a sum of money to donate to charitable causes.
  • Inheritance for your heirs.

Cash Value

Cash value is an investment that can be included in an insurance policy. This makes it possible to access this money without penalties, in the case that you need extra cash, usually during retirement. You can access this money by terminating your insurance policy or applying for cash loans where your policy’s value is used as collateral.

Other Advantages

Other advantages to having life insurance include:

  • Financial safety for your loved ones.
  • The choice of what price you pay.
  • Premiums can be lower than regular insurance.

Download Software to Keep Your Children Safe Online

Your relationship with your children should be based on love and trust. However, most parents will admit that trust is often misused and desecrated by kids. Kids tend to be immature and often commit mistakes, presuming that they will not be caught. In such a scenario, it may be very difficult to maintain your trust.

There is no harm in giving repeated chances to your child, provided that they are not in danger or do not face any harm. However, the internet can be a very dangerous place for a child to surf without any supervision. There are numerous fraudulent websites that are waiting for just such chances to come their way.

From financial loss to psychological scars, there are many disadvantages of being exploited on the internet. In such a scenario, the best way to tackle the problem is to download software applications that will keep track of your children’s web surfing activities.

If you feel that this is unethical and immoral, just think about the consequences of your child getting injured on the internet. From financial loss due to improper submission of financial data on a fraudulent website, to exposure to unsafe and unsuitable material, you will be taking a huge risk if you simply work on the basis of blind trust.

If you download software programs for supervising your child and you find that your child is living up your trust, you can always remove the program as a mark of your respect for your child’s abilities to stay disciplined. On the other hand, if the child ignores your instructions, you can carry out further moral teachings to ensure that the child understands the risks involved. Use such programs as a necessary evil, and remove from your computer things that may be unsafe.

Better Health for the Whole Family

i'm really not sure

One of the big rules for parents, adoptive or not, is that the first few months to a year are likely to be spent with only the baby getting a lot of sleep. Infants have a lot of fear of the unknown. After all, everything in the world is unknown to them. So they tend not to sleep through the night especially well. And while you can always sleep with them in your bed, this can tend to cause tensions between parents who may want to continue attempting to have the next baby… or just those who want to connect carnally. It can even have a negative impact on your baby’s health, if you tend to roll around in your sleep.

So keeping the child in bed with you might not be the best option. And if you suffer from enough sleep deprivation, your health will begin to deteriorate. So you might want to consider using the car trick. Now, this is not some kind of stunt work, or a circus act, but simple pragmatism. Simply put, you take your baby in the car (obviously, in its car seat), take a little drive, and the child conks out within a matter of minutes. The car trick may not work with every child, because some have differing temperaments than others.

But with a lot of babies, there is just something about being inside of a moving vehicle. Maybe it reminds them of being back inside the womb. So whip out your Volvo models, or even your regular car, and take a little spin around the block. Make it something romantic for you and your partner, while the child begins to nod off in the back seat. After awhile, you might find this turning into something of a tradition, whenever your baby has a little bit of extra energy. A peacefully sleeping baby is better for everybody.

Baby Ear Infections

Having a baby is the greatest joy in a parent’s life. You want the best for your child and want to make sure they are always safe and healthy. The worst part is when your child is sick and you have no idea what’s wrong. Short of going to Canada 411, you want to find the best possible solution for your child’s illness.

When a baby gets an ear infection, it can be quite painful. All you know is that your child is crying and you have no idea why. Upon taking them to the doctor you find out they have an ear infection. Some babies are prone to constant ear infections. However, how do you know when to take them to a doctor or wait for it to go away on its own?

If your baby is fussy and crying more than usual, that means it may have an ear infection. Another sign is if your baby is pulling at its ears a lot. They are trying to signal that they are in pain. A reduced appetite is another symptom of an ear infection as ear infections can upset the gastrointestinal tract as well. Your baby may experience diarrhea or even make it hard for them to chew and swallow, thus the reduction in appetite.

Also, if you notice a bad smell coming from the ear or yellow or white pus, that means there is definitely some kind of infection.

If you notice any of these symptoms, call your doctor immediately before they become worse. The doctor will examine your child’s ear and treat it as necessary. Many times they will tell you that the ear infection will clear up on its own and will give you medicine to reduce the pain the baby’s ear.

After Baby is Born

The moment has arrived! You finally get to bring home the proverbial bundle of joy. So now what happens? What do you need to do?

Sometimes this depends on the amount of preparation you did before the baby arrived. Some families may need to look at ways to cut expenses, like switching to discount car insurance, to save money for diapers. Others may need to decide where baby is going to sleep for the first months.

First, plan to get rest. You just went through an excruciating labor and delivery that has left you a bit weak and very tired. Expect to be sore after giving birth. Don’t be hard on yourself, or your body, if you don’t spring back as fast as you had hoped. Look at all the work you have done. Don’t expect to have a six-pack right after giving birth. Your stomach muscles will still be soft and expanded.

Exercise will help tighten those muscles again, although the trick may be finding the time. Check into baby and mommy exercise classes at the local gym or hospital. Moms can bring their babies to class, and no one is going to frown when you have to take a break to nurse the baby. Working out with strollers has become another popular way to incorporate exercise into your day. An instructor will lead the group through exercises and a cardiovascular workout.

Second, find other new moms. Meeting with a playgroup has helped many a new mom through those first months. Who else but new parents are willing to spend hours discussing the nuances of infancy: bowel movements, spitting up, breast feeding, pumping milk, getting no sleep, losing the baby weight. The list is endless. You won’t feel so alone knowing that there are others experiencing the same emotions that you are.

How to Get your Baby to Smile for Pictures

At Evan's second birthday party (Gymboree)
Image via Wikipedia

You are at Grandma’s 80th birthday party, and she wants a picture of all the little kids and her, but your little guy just will not cooperate. How can you get him to be the ham you know he can be? Try these tricks.

Make sure he’s comfortable. If you are going to an event and know you will want good pictures, find an outfit you know is both cute and comfortable. While that little tux might look charming, if it’s scratching his tummy, he will not be excited. Try putting a onesie underneath it. Whatever you do, be sure you’ve figured it out before the picture day, so he doesn’t start getting cranky about clothes, and you aren’t in a panic trying to fix it right before you head out the door.

Make sure he isn’t hungry or tired. Plan an extra-long nap in the morning and bring snacks with you if you are going to a party in the afternoon. Also, take pictures closer to the beginning of the party as your little guy may get tired because of all the excitement later on. If your baby gets cranky after he wakes up from a nap, try to work out a picture time far enough away that Baby has recovered his good spirits.

Give him something new or special. If you are trying to get some good baby pictures and you have a notoriously moody little one, get him a new (and photogenic) stuffed animal or toy right before you arrive or when you arrive at the photographer’s. Your baby might be so interested in the toy, he doesn’t mind being set in a chair and looking at a camera. But watch out for this one! Your baby might be so interested in his new toy that he will not pay any attention to you or the photographer, and might still be uncooperative.
